Being a small island, it’s very easy to get pretty much anywhere in the UK by car. And while, yes, we might complain about choc-a-bloc traffic, nasty corners and neglected infrastructure, the UK is apparently one of the safest places in Europe to drive in.
That’s according to researchers at Vignetteswitzerland.com, anyway, who dug into data from the European Transport Safety Council to find out the number of road deaths per million inhabitants across European countries. The results showed that the UK is in fact one of the top three countries where you’re least likely to get in a fatal accident.
According to the study, there were 25.89 road deaths per million inhabitants in the UK, which is down 9.5 percent since 2012. It ranked only below Norway and Sweden which saw 21.38 and 21.72 deaths per million residents respectively.
For comparison, Romania was declared the most dangerous European country to drive in with a count of 85.81 deaths per million inhabitants in 2022. Serbia was close behind, followed by Bulgaria.
