Parting with your money is such sweet sorrow, and the Royal Shakespeare Company knows that. That’s why it’s selling 25,000 tickets for only £25 this year to a selection of shows in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The season of shows will begin in April and run across four venues until September. The discounted ticket scheme is an effort to bring new audiences to the world of Shakespeare, and comes alongside two new artistic directors for the RSC.
Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey’s season of work will attempt to discover where Shakespeare’s work fits in current cultural contexts. The run will include some of the Bard’s best known classics, including ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Othello’, as well as some of his often overlooked works like ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’. Northern Ballet will pay a visit to perform their rendition of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and there’s even a Ukrainian language version of ‘King Lear’ set in modern day Ukraine.
On top of the eight Shakespeare plays, Evans and Harvey are bringing nine other plays to the playwright’s hometown, each one infused with political commentary. Three of these will be world premiers, and the pair hope that this will inject a sense of the present into what some might see as an old company putting on old plays.
This initiative will work in conjunction with the RSC’s £10 TikTok tickets, which allows anyone under the age of 25 to see any of their productions for a tenner. You can find out more and buy tickets on the RSC website here.
