While we know that you’re probably waiting in eager anticipation for the King Charles III bank notes to finally be released into the world, there’s some other (pop) royalty-inspired coinage that you can get your hands on before then.
As of today (Monday, February 26), Wham! fans can own an official, Charles-approved coin dedicated to the late George Michael. We should note that you can’t actually buy anything with these coins, they’re meant to be keepers.
The Royal Mint has released the special coins in tribute to Michael’s huge hit ‘Faith’. The collection is the latest in the Royal Mint’s Music Legends series, which has already celebrated David Bowie, Elton John and Queen.
There are three versions of the collectable coin to choose from. Each one features a detailed portrait of the star wearing his iconic aviator sunglasses, cross earring and an engraving of the refrain from ‘Faith’. You can get it in gold, silver, or silver, red and black. Here’s another snap of the coins.
Rebecca Morgan, director of collector services at the Royal Mint said: ‘From his debut with Wham! to becoming one of the bestselling solo musicians of all time, George Michael is a global superstar whose work has inspired and influenced generations with his music and his unique style. Loved by millions of fans worldwide, we are delighted to be introducing an official UK coin celebrating his life and legacy.’
George Michael Entertainment said, ‘On behalf of George Michael, we are deeply honoured that the Royal Mint is paying tribute to him by creating a series of beautifully crafted coins. He would have been enormously proud and genuinely touched that a national institution should have decided to pay tribute to his memory in this way.’
How can you get the Royal Mint’s limited edition George Michael coins?
You can get one of your own Wham-tastic coins over on the Royal Mint website. The cheapest one available costs a reasonable £15.50, whole the 2oz gold version will set you back an eye-watering £5,305.
In other money news, you can get a sneak peak of the upcoming King Chazza notes at an exhibition in London. You may or may not have also noticed some other commemorative coins that have been released recently, like these nature-inspired ones and these ones featuring some iconic landmarks.
And if you’re more into collecting stamps over coins, take a look at this limited edition Spice Girls collection.
