Most days, travelling anywhere in the UK on the train costs an eye-watering amount. So anytime there’s a sale going, you best believe we’re all over it. If you missed out on the sweet deals of the Great Western Railway Getaway sale at the start of the month, don’t fret — the January rail discounts aren’t over yet. In fact, there’s an even bigger sale happening next week.
The Department for Transport has announced that more than two million train tickets will be available for up to half price from Tuesday, January 14 to Monday, January 20 for journeys between January 17 and March 31.
Almost all train operators in the country are taking part in the mega sale, include Transport for Wales and Scotrail. The only operators not involved are Hull Trains, Lumo and Merseyrail.
To give you an idea of just how much you could be saving, a trip from Liverpool to London will cost as little as £7, travelling from Preston to Edinburgh could cost just £8.40, Nottingham to Manchester will be less than a tenner and London all the way to Edinburgh will be as cheap as £26.15.
Once the cheap tickets are gone, they’re gone, so DfT recommends snapping yours up sooner rather than later.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: ‘I'm launching the biggest ever rail sale so more passengers can get big discounts on train tickets to visit destinations across the country.
‘Whether you're planning a getaway or wanting to visit friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions on all sorts of journeys.’
We hate to be the ones to remind you but rail fares nationwide are going up even more in March, so enjoy the bargains while you can.
