2. Rail strikes
There was one point in 2024 when we thought that rail strikes in the UK had finally come to an end. But after two years of industrial action, we’ve learned that you can never be too sure. Throughout the year, Brits were checking in to see whether their journeys would be disrupted by strikes — they checked our explainer just under 850,000 times, to be exact.

3. Wilko is reborn
The Wilko saga was a wild ride that began with the beloved high street chain going into administration in 2023 (leading to emotional TikToks and hilarious social media tributes) only to make a massive comeback this year. The news that the new owners of the brand plan to open 300 new Wilkos across the UK was viewed by you 560,000 times.

4. Northern lights
2024 was a magical year for night sky watchers here in the UK. Aurora borealis has made frequent appearances here thanks to the sun reaching something called a solar maximum. Time Out gave you everything you needed to know to catch sight of the glowing spectacle, read by you guys over 350,000 times.

5. Could the UK and America soon be linked by a 3,400-mile tunnel?
This was the news that the UK and US’s ‘special bond’ could become more concrete. A tunnel 145 times longer than the Channel Tunnel linking London to New York sounds like a crazy idea, which is probably why this story was viewed just over 340,000 times.
