There are a lot of things to consider when you’re booking a holiday. You need to think about the weather, where you’ve been before and what languages you can sort-of-almost-just-about order dinner in, but most of all you need to stick to a budget.

As lovely as it would be to fly out to the Maldives every few months, most of us just don’t have the funds for that sort of adventure. Because of that, it might seem like travelling is a pipe dream for you, but according the Independent, based on information from to flight comparison website Skyscanner, it doesn’t need to be.

According to them, Bremen, a mid-sized city in northern Germany, is the best place to go if you’re looking to save some cash on your next getaway. An average economy return flight from Britain is only £39; cheaper than most dinners for two. Bremen is perfect for a long weekend or a city break, with loads of classic architecture and historical sights.

Next was Poznan in Poland. Warsaw and Krakow are already very popular amongst tourists, Poznan is lesser known, therefore costs less, but still offers loads of food, culture, and a very pretty old town. A return ticket will generally set you back £58.

Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina was the third most budget friendly, with flights sitting around £67 in total. Being further south, you can expect a bit more sun, so this is a good shout for a warm city break to break up the April showers.

The complete list of the cheapest place to travel to from Britain, including the average cost of a return flight as reported by the Independent:

  1. Bremen, Germany – £39
