Brace yourself Brits, because another huge storm is coming our way this weekend. While lots of places are still recovering from the aftermath of Storm Bert, Storm Darragh is on the way, and the Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for strong wings in some parts of the country.

Red weather warning

The West Country, and lots of other locations in England, are going to be hit by severe gales from late Friday afternoon, through the night and into Saturday. Don’t panic. For most of the weekend the alert is only amber. The red warning is in place from 3am to 11am on Saturday morning, affecting western and southern coastal regions of Wales and the Bristol Channel in England. A red warning means gusts are likely to reach above 90 miles per hour, leading to danger to life, structural damage to buildings, transport disruption and power cuts.

Amber weather warning

The amber warning, which covers the west of England and Wales, is in place from 11am to 9pm, so expect strong winds during that time. Parts of Somerset are going to be particularly gusty. Amber means winds could reach 80 miles per hour, and be strong enough to bring down trees or disrupt transport and power lines.

Flooding

Heavy rain is also forecast, with 15 to 25mm likely to fall between Friday and Sunday in the amber area, while Exmoor is predicted to get a lot more. The Met has issued a yellow warning, meaning risk of low level flooding, which covers all parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and southern and eastern Scotland.

Snow

In the north of Scotland, a yellow snow warning is in place, with hills above 400 metres forecast to get 20cm of snow.

It’s going to be a wet and windy weekend for most people in the UK, make sure to stay safe. Keep up to date with all the weather warnings on the Met Office’s website.
