The idea of climbing a mountain often sounds great – until, that is, it’s two hours later and you’re pink, sweaty and puffing your way to the summit. Well, if you head to Mount Snowdon, there’s now a much more comfortable way of getting to the top: you can sit back, relax and let a train do all the hard work.

Trains have been travelling to the top of Wales’ highest mountain for almost 130 years. The railway closed in autumn 2019 to undergo a massive £1 million revamp, before partially resuming operations in 2022 with a service running three-quarters of the way up the mountain. Now, the Snowdon Mountain Railway (aka Hafod Eryri) is fully back in business.

The service runs for 4.7 miles from Llanberis village to the summit. The reopening also means that the summit visitor centre and cafe are able to reopen, as staff can now commute and transport supplies.

Vince Hughes, commercial manager at Snowdon Mountain Railway said: ‘With over 1,000 metres of line relayed for the enhancement and long-term improvement of the Snowdon Mountain Railway service, this was a historic and successful undertaking.

‘Our operations and commercial teams have worked incredibly hard in preparation for our trains returning to the summit, and we are looking forward to a busy few months ahead. This is a massively exciting time for Snowdon Mountain Railway and we have plenty to look forward to!’
