A few hundred years ago, someone in Italy decided to mush up some tomatoes, slather them on a thin piece of dough, shove it in the oven with some cheese on top and call it day. And thank god they did. Today, pizza is probably the most ubiquitous food in the world. Since that fateful day, chefs across the planet have worked tirelessly to perfect this dish.
And ss it turns out, we have a few of the best in Europe working on this little island, according to pizza-ficionados 50 Top Pizza.
The best pizzeria in Europe, and also therefore in the UK, is Napoli on the Road in Chiswick, London. It claimed the gold thanks to its ‘authentic flavours of Neapolitan pizza with a contemporary twist’. Delightful. You can read more about Napoli on the Road’s triumph on Time Out London here.
The fourth best in the continent is 50 Kalò, which is situated just off the Strand. In fact, all but one of the nation’s best pizzerias are squared away in the capital, with L’Antica Pizza in Hampstead coming in at 26, O’ Ver in Southwark at 29, and Peckham’s 081 Pizzeria at 43.
However! One little restaurant in an oft-forgotten northern town has, against all odds, fought back against the London-centred UK pizza industry. Stile Napoletano in Chester found itself in 18th place, thanks to its friendly staff, pleasant interior decor and, obviously, really good pizza. According to 50 Top Pizza, head chef Giacomo Guido has ‘worked [since 2018] with passion and expertise to ensure that every bite is an unforgettable experience’,
So, pizza lovers, make your pilgrimage to London or Chester someday soon, it’s worth it. We promise.
