A little bit of luxury goes a long way – and it certainly helps in getting a good night’s sleep. So just imagine the kind of shuteye you’d get spending a night in some of the world’s most luxurious hotels.

If you’re fed up with hostels, done with shoddy holiday lets and prepared to spend some extra cash, get some inspiration from Condé Nast Traveller, which has released its ‘Gold List’ of the most spectacular hotels across the world for 2024. From swanky city stays to glamorous seaside resorts, these lodgings are posh with a capital P. Alongside dazzling getaways in Rome and an entire private island in Fiji, six British hotels made the cut.

First up, Heckfield Place in Hampshire was chosen for the Gold List for its ‘refreshingly unexpected’ lack of ‘stuffiness or pomp’. With the farm-to-fork ethos of the kitchen and a ‘two-floor oasis’ featuring a pool and treatment rooms, it sounds like an ideal place to switch off from the big wide world for a while.

In Scotland, there were two hotels to be granted world-class status. Lundies House on the north coast of the Scottish Highlands was praised for achieving the ‘the holy grail of the small hotel: the atmosphere of an intimate country house that is as private or clubbable as the mood takes you.’

Then, it was the iconic Gleneagles in Perthshire that got a shoutout – ‘much loved by an array of celebrities who flock to the estate to spend time in the great outdoors or kick back in the award-winning spa’. Its restaurant was named the best in the UK at the beginning of the year and its immaculate levels of hospitality were named the best in the whole world

Lucknam Park, a Grade II-listed manor house in Wiltshire, also made the list, with Condé Nast editors noting its ‘smart touches’, ‘gloriously steamy indoor-outdoor pools’ and ‘cosy bar’. Fancy stuff.

Two hotels in London completed the crowd of UK entries. And they’re two timeless classics — Claridge’s and The Dorchester. You can find out all of the hotels to make Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List for 2024 here
