We’re sure you don’t need us to explain Britain’s current cost-of-living situation, but it’s safe to say that everyone’s holiday budgets will be tighter than ever this year. While it might mean passing up on a month in the Mediterranean, the good news is that the UK genuinely has some wonderful towns and cities that don’t break the bank.

Last year, a study revealed that Blackpool was the most affordable staycation destination in the UK. This year, the seaside town has managed to claim the title of not only cheapest, but favourite amongst budget conscious travellers. Three cheers for Blackpool! Where an average night's hotel stay will only set you back £72.86, which, depending on where you're coming from, might be less than your train fare to get there.

With its iconic pleasure beach and pier, Blackpool is the epitome of the classic British seaside resort. UK holidaymakers have been showing their appreciation for the town for decades. It was a particular hotspot back in the day among northern factory workers would descend upon its shores en masse during their annual respite known as ‘wake weeks’.

Last year, research found that 27 percent of people were more likely to book a staycation as a result of the cost-of-living crisis. Ninety-four percent said that it was important for them to find something that offers value for money, but 64 percent were adamant that a shrunken wallet would not deter them from having a memorable trip. If you are in that 27 percent, you might want to start thinking about one of these underrated gems.

The study measured average cost of a night's stay alongside Google searches and TikTok views to determine the nation's favourite cheap spots. These are the ten best budget staycation destinations in the UK, according to the research done by credit card company Aqua.

  1. Blackpool
  2. Bournemouth
  3. Scarborough
  4. Whitby
  5. Swansea
  6. Sunderland
  7. Poole
  8. Weymouth
  9. Hastings
  10. Weston-Super-Mare and Eastbourne (joint 10th)
