Sometimes we all just need to get outside, embrace the unpredictable British weather and blow away the cobwebs. And there’s no better place to do that than in one of the UK’s 15 national parks. We Brits are spoiled for choice when trying to choose which park to head to, but who says we can’t have a few more?

Now, communities are being invited to put their areas forward to become Scotland’s third official national park. ‘At least one’ new place will be given the status by 2026, according to the Scottish government.

Right now, groups or individuals can only register interest to keep up to date with the process. Actual nominations are set to open later this year once the appraisal framework has been finalised. The government says that this ‘will help to ensure the nomination process is fair, transparent and inclusive’.

The country’s existing parks – the Cairngorms (the UK’s largest), and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs – were both established 20 years ago.

Gordon Watson, chief executive of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park Authority, said: ‘National Parks have a vital role to play in securing a more sustainable future for Scotland. They are unique places where we can maximise the benefits that can be provided for nature, climate and people.

Scotland has set ambitious targets to reach net zero and to restore biodiversity by 2045. If we are to reach those targets, urgent, bold action is required and Scotland’s existing – and any new – national parks can make a substantial contribution.’
