If you like to indulge in a quick and cheap bite to eat post-grocery shopping, we have some sad news. Sainsbury’s is shutting down all of its remaining cafes and saying goodbye to its patisserie, pizza and hot food counters.

A total of 61 Sainsbury’s cafes will be closing for good. That means that it’s so long to such delights as the £4.30 jacket potato, £7 chicken tikka masala and £6.75 fish and chips.

But if you’re a fan of the stuff available at the patisserie, pizza and hot food counters, don’t fret. Sainbos said it will make the most popular items from those sections available on its shelves.

Sainsbury’s said it’s doing all that to ‘simplify the business’ and says that most shoppers don’t actually use the cafes very often. The closures will lead to 3,000 jobs being cut across the supermarket’s branches.

Simon Roberts, chief exec at Sainsbury’s, said: ‘The decisions we are announcing today are essential to ensure we continue to drive forward our momentum but have also meant some difficult choices impacting our dedicated colleagues in a number of parts of our business. We'll be doing everything we can to support anyone impacted by today's announcements.’
