Is there anything that warms the cockles more at the seaside than a newspaper wrapping of freshly battered cod, fluffy chips, mushy peas and a squeeze of lemon? We think not. Here in the UK, we take an awful lot of pride in our fish and chip scene, but with that comes an awful lot of dispute over which chippie is the very best.
Swooping in to help settle that debate is the National Fish and Chip Awards. The top 40 entries for its 2024 Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year category have just been unveiled, so now you can see whether your fave stands a chance of getting the coveted crown. For 2023, it went to Whiteheads Fish and Chip Takeaway in Hornsea, East Yorkshire.
Andrew Crook, President at the National Federation of Fish Friers, organiser of the awards, said: ‘Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year is a notoriously difficult category to stand out in, but the panel of experts had many tough decisions to make. However, we’ve selected an exceptional shortlist that showcases the unwavering passion, dedication and excitement that the fish and chip industry brings to British culture.’
You’ll have to wait until February 28 2024 to find out the winner. But if you’re feeling ambitious (and hungry) in the meantime, you could always use the list to do your own fish and chip tour of the country conclusion. Here’s the shortlist.
