Yes, it may be gloomy and wet 70 percent of the time and yes, our politicians certainly don’t make things easy but putting all that to one side, the UK has some gorgeous pockets that make for dreamy places to live.

Lifestyle website Muddy Stilletos has just revealed its take on the absolute best places to be a local for 2024. And if one thing is apparent, the site really does dig ‘period charm’.

Alongside two lovely London neighbourhoods, six other spots made the cut. First up was the market town of Helmsey in North Yorkshire, which, despite its poor transport links, was chosen for its ‘charm, dramatic countryside,  destination dining, scrupulously scrubbed 18th-century cottages, award-winning indie shopping and a Norman castle.’

Next on the list was the fairytale-sounding village of Barton-Under-Needwood in Staffordshire. Similarly oozing with quintessential English charm, it’s home to pretty lakes and a buzzing marina dotted with delicious eateries and a cute independent cinema.

The Herefordshire town of Ledbury also featured for its ‘quiet luxury’, collection of Tudor buildings and cobbled alleyways. With convenient links to London, ‘architectural eye candy’ and Michelin star spots, Stamford in Lincolnshire came next.

Shrewsbury in Shropshire followed, picked for its historical character contrasted with a ‘cool and contemporary cultural’ scene And finally, it was Yorkshire’s posh hotspot Harrogate that completed the list.

On the look out for somewhere to relocate to? Sure, these are all good bets, especially if you’re more of a slow lifestyle, country bumpkin type. But if you’re after somewhere a bit trendier, we recommend consulting our pick of the coolest neighbourhoods in the UK right now
