If there’s one thing we all think of when we hear the words Pizza Express, it’s dough balls. The glorious carby pillows and their mouth-watering garlicky, buttery sidekick are a truly iconic staple on the UK pizza chain’s menu.
Some may argue that dough balls are too good to be messed with, that their simplicity is what makes them sing. But for those who have wondered whether they could get even better, they’re about to be available in two new flavours.
As the festive season approaches, for the first time ever customers will be able to indulge in Dough Balls in Blankets — dough balls wrapped in pancetta with sage, sprinkled with Gran Milano cheese and served with a honey mustard dip.
PX is also bringing back its Loaded Snowball Dough Balls, topped with white chocolate, cinnamon and icing sugar. There’s also a Snowball Dough Ball Christmas Tree lined up to make the dessert available as a sharer, served with extra lashings of white chocolate sauce and salted caramel dip.
For the vegans out there, a plant-based version of the sweet treat will be available. And for all you staunch fans of the classic, don’t fret — they’re not going anywhere.
Jane Treasure, food and beverage director at Pizza Express said: ‘While many already think our dough balls are perfect as they are, you can't argue with wrapping them in crispy pancetta! We're beyond delighted to unveil our Dough Balls in Blankets as part of this year's Christmas Menu at Pizza Express, fusing the festive flavours we all know and love with the iconic Pizza Express favourites that our customers come back for time and time again.’
Time Out’s take on Pizza Express
Ever since Pizza Express served up its first slice from a window hatch in Soho in 1965, it has become a beloved institution on UK high streets and garnered a cult-like following. Even Michelin-star chefs can’t deny that its pizza sits among the best that the UK has on offer.
We recently delved into the history of the eatery, speaking to PX innovators, employees and superfans about its humble beginnings, surprising jazz connections and of course the long-standing brilliance of those legendary dough balls.
