What would you do with just over £1 million? Go on a mega shopping spree? Splash out on a bunch of luxury holidays? How about bidding on the most haunted haunted house in all of Wales?
Derwydd Mansion in Carmarthenshire, which has a reputation for being the spookiest property in the region, will be put up for bid this month with a guide price of £1.6 million.
Dating all the way back to 1485, it’s said to be the house where Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII) took refuge before the Battle of Bosworth and was home to Tudor knight Sir Rhys ap Thomas, who went on to become the most powerful man in Wales.
Its resident spectre, known as the White Lady, is said to be the ghost of a former resident called Gwen Vaughn. Apparently, she appears in the window of Sir Rhys ap Thomas’s room with one arm on the sill and the other pointing somewhere. Even more eery, is that she supposedly only reveals herself to unmarried men.
If you happen to fall into that demographic — bad luck. If not (or if you’re unbothered by paranormal activity), here’s a bit more about the fifteenth century property.
It boasts a generous 14 bedrooms, four bathrooms, two sitting rooms, a library, a drawing room, a conservatory, pantry and a self-contained cottage. Its eight-acre grounds also feature a ‘secret wood’, a walled garden and what is thought to be one the largest messenger greenhouses in Wales (ones built with aluminium rather than timber) with peach trees and vines.
But that’s enough from us, take a look at the place for yourself...
