Mud, glorious mud. The mucky stuff is much more versatile than you might think. You can bathe in it, purify your skin with it, make pots from it. But did you know you can even live in houses made out of mud?
Well, you can. And those houses can be really very fancy indeed. Like the above five-bedroom pad, which is in Devon and looks straight out of a fairytale. To further add to its mystical and picturesque aesthetic, the property has a thatched roof and curved walls, as well as a cute cottage garden. It certainly gives off ‘Peter Rabbit’ vibes.
Technically, the house isn’t made out of mud, exactly, but cob – which is a mixture of clay, sand, straw and water. Making houses out of cob certainly isn’t a new thing: apparently the building technique has been around since prehistoric times. Cob houses usually have very thick walls, meaning they have great insulation in winter and stay cool in summer.
This cob house is in Ottery St Mary, one of Devon’s oldest towns. It was constructed by local builder and cob expert Kevin McCabe, who later appeared on design TV show ‘Grand Designs’ for a separate mud-based project.
With swathes of character, the cob house stretches across three floors, with two ensuite bedrooms, a farmhouse kitchen, an oak staircase and oak doors. The large living room features a multi-fuel stove and wooden ceiling beams, while there’s also a heat pump that serves the hot water system and luxurious underfloor heating.
All this is on the market for £795,000. Here are a few more pictures of the place.
