What with all the strikes and delays and cancellations, there hasn’t been much positive train news of late. But now Northern Rail has launched a flash sale, with a million train journeys on offer for as little as 50p. Some consolation?

From 10am today (Tuesday January 10), travellers can snap up any of the tickets, which cover journeys between destinations like Hull, Bridlington, Barrow-in-Furness, Manchester Piccadilly, Chester, Stockport, Blackpool South, Preston, Warrington Central, Liverpool Lime Street, Harrogate and Knaresborough.

Huw Merriman, the government’s rail minister, said: ‘This flash sale is five million chances to see family, friends or just get out and around for prices as low as 50p. We need to get people back on our railways and initiatives like this will do just that.’

Further £1 and £1.50 flash sales are set to follow. You can find out more on the Northern Rail website.
