Cardiff Central railway station is set to get a humungous revamp. A generous £140m is going into modernising the Welsh hub and now, new images have revealed what it could turn into.
This week, Transport for Wales (TfW) shared a glimpse into Cardiff Central’s future with the release of new renders. Plans for the makeover include a new brick arch at the rear entrance and more retail and cycle facilities. There will also be a larger concourse to increase capacity.
It’s hoped that the revamp will help to manage overcrowding, improve accessibility at the station and ‘make it fit for a capital city and sustain future growth’. TfW wants to modernise the station while still complementing its heritage and history. Here’s what that could look like.

It’ll be a little while before it actually looks like that though. The proposal for the station’s makeover was only submitted at the end of 2024 and planning documents are due to be submitted in the near future. Once that’s approved, work can begin. A decision is likely to be made around autumn this year.
The plans are part of a wider investment into Welsh transport. Work is going on right now to launch the South Wales metro service, which promises to double the number of services across the region by early 2026.
