Several of the UK’s biggest banking chains have struggled to keep high-street branches open in recent years. According to consumer experts at Which?, over 6,000 high-street bank branches have closed in the last decade – and more than 1,400 of those were in the NatWest Group.

The NatWest Group includes NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, and it’s just announced another wave of closures. A total of 53 more NatWest branches will shut across the country, in addition to one which was previously announced. They’ll all close before June 2025.

Why are NatWest bank branches closing?

NatWest says that statistics show a decline in in-person banking, with more customers using mobile apps.

The bank said that over-the-counter bank transactions fell by 62 percent between October 2019 and October 2024, and that mobile app usership increased over the same period by 53 percent.

A NatWest spokesperson said: ‘Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.

‘We know it can affect those less confident with alternatives we offer.

‘We'll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on.’
