From the moment it opened back in July of 2022, Manchester’s very own floating park on the Castlefield viaduct has been a hit. The garden, which has been built on a disused rail bridge, allows visitors to enjoy a bit of greenery set high above the bustling metropolis below.

The 150m long urban Eden was initially supposed to be temporary, but it’s been so popular that its lifespan has been extended a couple of times, and now we’re moving into what the National Trust is calling ‘Phase 2’ of the project.

According to the Trust, which owns the garden and the viaduct: ‘Currently, visitors walk through a series of spaces and gardens before coming to an untouched section of the viaduct beyond a glass wall. It’s this untouched section which [they] are turning their attention to next.’

Phase 2 would see the park double in size, extending to a whopping 330m long. They also want to add a new entryway ‘towards Mancunian Way to improve access and allow more people to visit.’

Plans are expected to be submitted towards the end of the year, with construction beginning sometime in 2025 if all goes to plan.

Calum McGowan, who runs the public forum on the viaduct, said: ‘To hear that plans are progressing, which will not just double the length of the pilot but secure the very future of this incredible industrial asset, provide a brand new through-route and even more green space for Manchester city centre, is frankly incredible.

‘We are very proud to have all this going on in our patch.’

The Castlefield Viaduct park will remain open until next year at the earliest, so you’ve got plenty of time to check it out before then. If you live in the local area and have thoughts about the future of the landmark, you can join one of the public consultations happening in the near future to get your voice heard. Good luck to the Viaduct and its fanbase. We look forward to seeing as they both grow and grow and grow.
