It’s all too easy to forget that the UK itself is a marvellous holiday destination. Going abroad for yer hols might seem more glamorous and adventurous but this country has plenty of its own charms, from picturesque seaside towns and brill beaches to cities packed with history and culture.

Staycations really took off during the pandemic, but they’re certainly here to stay. And that’s shown by a new report by the Travelodge Travel Index, which says that a whopping 72 percent of Britons who’ve booked a summer holiday this year are staying in the UK.

Of those, about 43 percent are heading to the coast, 25 percent are off to rural areas and 20 percent are opting for a city break. Cornwall was named the top coastal spot, while the top rural spot was the Lake District.

Here are the top holiday spots in the UK this summer, according to Travelodge Travel Index:

Top five coastal spots

  1. Cornwall
  2. Devon
  3. Isle of Wight
  4. Whitby
  5. Blackpool

Top five rural spots
