Public transport really can make or break your experience in a city. In this day and age, a smooth, low-effort journey, with minimal changes and waiting time is the stuff of dreams. But there are some places that can deliver just that, and now Time Out can reveal the cities that have the best public transport in the world.

No one knows these networks better than locals. To identify the cities with the world’s greatest public transport, we surveyed more than 20,000 city-dwellers in more than 50 cities across the globe. We simply asked them: is it easy to get around your city by public transport?

Two British cities made it onto the list. First, London’s world-renowned underground network and big red buses came in at number 11, with an astounding 91 percent of locals singing its praises. The Big Smoke’s public transport has long been central to its global image, with the iconic Tube branding an instantly recognisable symbol of the city, and it seems the reality does it justice.

Just two places down is Edinburgh, ranked 13th on the list. Though the Scottish capital is compact and highly walkable, it clearly refuses to compromise on the quality of its transport links. In our survey, 88 percent of locals agreed that it was easy to navigate by public transport, with trams gliding through New Town and buses to get you from A to B all day and night.

Berlin topped the list both within Europe and globally, with 97 percent of its residents bigging up its transport network. You can find the full list of the world’s best public transport here.
