If you happened to be in Doncaster in November, you might have spotted the huge fluorescent sculpture inside the city’s Minster.

The vibrant ‘Love and Unity’ installation was by an artist named Morag Myerscough (she’s also created pieces for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Coachella festival). Made up of wood painted in neon shades and several textile elements, it was created as part of Doncaster’s Festival of Light back in November.

During the festival, visitors were encouraged to add to the artwork by responding to the words ‘love’ and ‘unity’ on a tag and tying it on. Members of the community were also invited to write a collective poem, which was then stitched onto the wooden structure.

Myserscough told Dezeen: ‘The Doncaster Festival of Light is free for the Doncaster community and I wanted to make a work that the community felt part of and it was to belong to them.’

She added: ‘I was inspired by the culture of embroidery and tapestry in religious buildings, by [textile artists] Edith John and my mother, Betty Fraser Myerscough. So I decided to reignite my love of sewing and started sewing this piece with no particular plan throughout the summer.’

Alongside all of that, the installation featured a soundscape created by Doncaster artist Doya Beardmore, which was made up of sessions with local students and archival recordings of Myerscough's father, the musician Henry Myerscough, who played alongside the likes of The Beatles and Bob Marley.

Sadly, the sculpture is no longer at the church, but you can take a look at it in all its glory below.
