This time each year, Bristol’s skyline fills with more than 100 colourful hot air balloons as part of Europe’s biggest annual balloon festival. The spectacular ascents can be seen from all over the city, and the event has well and truly become part of Bristol’s DNA.
In the lead up to the main fiesta, Bristol is putting on a ‘fiesta week’ for the first time, launching hot air balloons from local communities. Several areas have been shortlisted and 18 local heroes have been nominated to be lifted up into the sky, but the exact location of these ascents aren’t being revealed until the night before.
Thanks to our erratic British weather though, none of the ascents are guaranteed. So, here’s hoping things clear up and Bristol doesn’t suffer the same fate as London’s Balloon Regatta – which was cancelled this year once again.
Planning on heading to Bristol to see the city’s majestic balloon fest? Here’s everything else you need to know about the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2024.
Date and timings
The main event is taking place from August 9 to August 11.
Mass ascents of over 100 balloons will be happening twice daily — one at 6am each day and one at 6pm (weather depending).
The best spots to watch
Ashton Court Estate
Ashton Court Estate will be at the heart of this weekend’s balloon action. It’s a great place to watch the mass ascents as well as catching all sorts of other balloon-related stuff, including army parachuting, night glows and aviation stunts. You can browse the full programme of Ashton Court here.
Clifton Observatory
Clifton Observatory boasts one of the most outstanding views in Bristol. Next to Clifton Suspension Bridge, you’ve got a view over the river and straight towards Ashton Court.
Harbourside
You don’t have to leave the city centre to get a decent view of the balloons. Find a harbourside cafe with outdoor seating and sit down with a coffee, awaiting their arrival overhead.
Brandon Hill
Head to Brandon Hill for a panoramic view of the city, next to Cabot Tower and surrounded by gorgeous gardens. If the wind direction is in your favour, the balloons my float right above it.
Dundry Hill
A short drive out of Bristol, Dundry Hill offers a countryside spot from which to enjoy the spectacular show. You’ll have a wide view of the city and an uninterrupted view of the skyline.
