Like a long-distance run striding smugly into the home straight, Hollywood’s awards season has arrived at its crowning glory: Oscars night. Golden statues will be handed out, speeches will be made, unfortunate mishaps will be dissected in real time on social media, and Tinseltown will give itself a well-deserved pat on the back for salvaging some major triumphs from a tough year.

Let’s face it, it’s compelling viewing and for movie lovers of a nocturnal persuasion, it’s well worth staying up for. Whether Everything Everywhere All at Once pulls off its predicted sweep or there’s a few major surprises in store, the night is never short of memorable moments. And best of all? No one, but no one, can predict what they’re going to be. Here’s how to tune in and strap in for the ride.

When are the Oscars 2023?

The 95th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 12 – two weeks earlier than last year, which was delayed in part because of the Winter Olympics, but still a bit later than its traditional late February airing.

They’re back in their current home – LA’s Dolby Theater – and will dish out awards in 23 categories. Check out the full list of nominees, as well as our full list of predictions

What time will the Oscars air in the UK and Ireland?

As long-time Oscar watchers on this side of the Pond will know, it’s not an early night for UK viewers. It all kicks off at 12am on Sky.

Reportedly, all of 23 Oscars will be given out on-air this year, after an ill-received decision to truncate the ceremony by dishing out some of the technical categories off-air.

So pack your fridge with Diet Cokes and/or energy drinks, but remember: it’s a fine balance between staying awake until the bitter end and being so wired on caffeine that you’re unable to cope when something insane happens at 3.30am. And, as veterans of Seth MacFarlane’s ‘boobs’ song, James Franco’s entire vibe, envelope-gate, Will Smith-gate, and many other recent Academy Awards snafus will testify, it almost certainly will.

How can I watch the Oscars in the UK and Ireland?

As per the Academy’s own handy list, the telecast is showing live on Sky UK and other Sky-adjacent stations (NOW TV, Sky One, Sky Living etc). Basically, you’ll need to have Sky or at least, have an insomniac neighbour who does.

Who is hosting this year’s ceremony?

Last year, hosting duties were split between a host of famous faces. This year it’s back to a solo compere: US talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel, back for his third hosting gig (he also did the 2017 and 2018 shows). He’s a trusty and reliable pair of hands with a nice line in Hollywood baiting and an entertaining faux-feud with Matt Damon.
