This month is officially the start of ‘storm naming season’. Yes, that’s an official thing. Each September the names of the UK’s stronger storms start again at A, and this week, we’re being visited by the first named storm of the 2023/24 season: Storm Agnes. Here is everything you need to know about Agnes, from when and where it’ll strike to how you can track it.

Where is Storm Agnes going to hit?

A yellow warning for wind has been issued for a large area of the UK including Scotland, Wales, the Midlands and the north-west and south-west of England. The warning means that there is a chance of some damage to buildings and a risk of power cuts.

The most powerful winds are expected to sweep coasts overlooking the Irish Sea. According to the Met Office ‘the precise track and depth of Storm Agnes is still being determined’ but gusts of up to 80mph could batter coastal areas, while 50-60mph winds are likely to be seen in several inland areas. As much as 60mm of rain could hit high-altitude areas of Scotland.

When will the storm hit the UK?

Agnes will impact the western regions of the UK on Wednesday, September 27 and into Thursday, September 28. The yellow weather warning begins at 10am on Wednesday and will remain in place until 7am the next day.

Is there a tracker?
