After battering the East Coast of the US over the course of the last week, the remnants of Hurricane Lee are headed towards the UK

‘Unsettled’ conditions are set to continue across the country this week, with the dregs of Hurricane Lee reaching British shores on Tuesday, September 19.

The storms in the US were severe and one man in Maine was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle. There were also widespread power outages, as well as severe travel disruption.

Over the course of Sunday September 17, parts of the UK experienced a month’s worth of rainfall. The downpours caused major flooding and severe travel disruption, with Exeter Airport forced to cancel the rest of its flights and close due to the adverse weather conditions.

And all this is set to continue throughout the week. The storm’s arrival will likely last until Thursday, bringing gusty winds and hailstorms, with conditions expected to remain ‘blustery’, according to the Met Office

Though it will no longer be a hurricane by the time it reaches us here, temperatures will feel more ‘autumnal’ and showers could be heavy with a further risk of thunderstorms. There are amber weather warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The advice from Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey is that ‘it is worth checking [the forecast] immediately before you head out on your journey so that you are aware where the most severe thunderstorms are possible.’

Despite the gorgeous September we’ve had so far, it looks like the winds are set to change. You can keep an eye on the forecast on the Met Office website here
