Boy racers and speed demons in Glasgow are going to have to slow down on the roads. The Scottish city is going to cut the speed limit to 20mph on nearly 4,000 roads in the Scottish city in a bid to ‘create safer streets’.

A consultant hired by Glasgow City Council has said the speed limit should be reduced on a whopping 3,868 streets in Glasgow. The council assessed more than 5,700 streets in the city, taking into account the location of schools, homes, shops, community centres and health services. Only 472 roads with the 30mph speed limit were recommended to stay at that speed, while all 1,400 streets with a 20mph limit were recommended to remain at that speed.

Introducing a 20mph speed limit across the city was approved by councillors back in 2020. The council’s road safety plan commits to introducing the limit on the majority of roads by 2030.

Councillor Angus Millar, the city’s convener for climate and transport, said: ‘A citywide 20mph speed limit will bring Glasgow in line with many other UK cities and help to create safer streets and communities for all of us, reducing the risk of accidents and the severity of injuries sustained.

‘Reducing the impact of traffic on communities will also contribute to the wider shift needed towards more sustainable forms of transport, which is vital if we are to achieve our target of Glasgow becoming carbon neutral by 2030.’

The slower speed limits will be rolled out in zones instead of across the city at once, it should take between 12 to 18 months for them all to come into force.
