Rail buffs, here’s some very, very exciting news. A home has gone up for sale in Scotland – and it’s housed within a dazzling former train station.
Saughtree station was turned into a home in the 1990s but the building dates all the way back to the 1860s. It was once a stop on the Borders County Railway, a 42-mile route that went between the Northumberland town of Hexham with Riccarton Junction, a Roxburghshire station that provided connections up to Edinburgh.
The Borders County Railway closed in 1963, though the Saughtree station has been closed since 1956. And despite being converted into a house, the station still bears the characterful marks of its past. As well as its platform, the property comes with a stretch of rail track and diesel locomotive, along with loads of train-related decor.
Aside from being a marvellous old train station, the building is also just very, very nice. Fashioned out of pretty stone, it’s got a slate roof, six bedrooms, six bathrooms, two lounges and some spacious gardens. Here are a few more pics of the place.
Pretty swish, eh? The property is near the hamlet of Saughtree in Roxburghshire, just on the Scottish side of the border. The official listing from estate agents Savills suggests offers of over £500,000.
