Bant a ni! Off we go! Wales is getting some brand-new tram trains and we are, obvs, totally here for it. Dazzling Citylink Class 398 tram trains have been unveiled by Transport of Wales (TfW) at their new £100 million depot at Taff’s Well.

The new fleet is part of the South Wales Metro project, which ultimately aims to provide faster, more frequent and better integrated transport services between Cardiff and the Valleys.

Peek inside the shiny 40-metre-long carriages and you’ll be greeted by swish grey and red interiors. The tram trains are also said to be ‘spacious and bright with multifunctional space for bicycles, wheelchair-bound passengers and seats for people with reduced mobility’, according to Alexia Course, TfW’s chief commercial officer.

Cool, eh? And even cooler is that the trains can operate on both electric lines and battery power. Able to travel up to 100 km/h on tram lines, they’ll hold up to 252 passengers.

In addition to the brand-new fleet, the new Taff’s Well depot is also in progress as part of ‘phase two’ of the South Wales Metro project. The new control centre will provide controls and signalling for the train network and act as a maintenance hub for the new tram trains.

Here is a sneak peek into what the tram trains look like:
