Dust off yer dresswear and picnic blankets, Glyndebourne will return this summer for another massive feast of all things opera. The world-renowned opera house, which is near Lewes in East Sussex, has been holding its annual Glyndebourne Festival since all the way back in 1934 and is one of the UK’s most famous (and, thanks to its country house setting, visually stunning) annual arts fests.
2024 will mark the Glyndebourne Festival’s 90th year – and, fittingly, it’ll have a fabulously diverse programme. There’ll be five productions in total – two of which are new – spread between May 16 and August 25.
Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ will be one of the new productions, directed by legendary US Broadway director Diane Paulus and featuring choreography by Jasmin Vardimon. That’ll run for 21 performances across May, June and August.
The other new production will be an English-language version of operetta ‘The Merry Widow’ by Franz Lehár, which will be directed by Cal McCrystal and conducted by John Wilson. That’ll run for 17 performances over June and July.
The other three productions are revivals of shows that’ve previously been a hit at Glyndebourne. Those are Barbe & Doucet’s 2019 version of Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflöte’ [‘The Magic Flute’], David McVicar’s 2005 edition of Handel’s ‘Giulio Cesare’ and Nikolaus Lehnhoff’s 2003 production of Wagner’s ‘Tristan und Isolde’.
Public booking for Glyndebourne Festival 2024 opens on March 3 and tickets will range from £25 to £295. You can find out more about tickets, performance dates and schedules on the Glyndebourne website here.
