Over the past few years, women’s football in the UK has finally begun getting the recognition it properly deserves. From England’s victory at the 2022 Euros and their mighty second-place showing at the World Cup last summer to club level and below, it’s safe to say that more in this country are following – and playing – women’s football than ever before.
And now, in a new landmark, England’s first purpose-built women’s football stadium could soon be built. Following a council vote, Brighton and Hove Albion Women have been given official permission to build their own stadium.
Exciting, eh? Brighton have shared Crawley Town FC’s Broadfield Stadium (about 20 miles from Brighton) since 2018, while many women’s teams share facilities and/or stadiums with men’s teams.
Brighton head coach Melissa Phillips said: ‘It is encouraging the council are supporting their motion to help us find a suitable location to return to the city.
‘This is another massive first step in our journey back to Brighton and we are excited for what is ahead for this club, community, and team.’
So when could we see BHAFC’s brand-new purpose-built women’s stadium in action? That’s a bit unknown at the mo. The council is now tasked with finding a suitable site.
