We’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news? Three Edinburgh bus services, the 20, the 63, and the 68, will cease running on July 14 of this year. The good news? Five new ones will take their place, including two brand spanking new routes which will link west Edinburgh with the rest of the city.

The new routes will be operated by Lothian Buses and Handicabs Lothian. They haven’t been approved by the council yet, but if they are, they’ll connect the small towns of Queensferry, Cramond, Clermiston, and Wester Hailes to the central areas of the city.

The exact routes, all but one of which will be run by Lothian Buses, will be as follows:

  • 1A: The Gyle to Hermiston Park and Ride via Ratho. Once an hour.
  • 4A: Queensferry to the Gyle. Once an hour.
  • 5A: Cramond to Balerno. Once an hour.
  • 6A: Wester Hailes to Chesser. Once an hour.
  • 7A: The Gyle to Clermiston. Once every hour and 15 minutes. (Handicabs Lothian)

According to a report given to the city’s council, the new routes were developed carefully after public consultation ‘to assist in balancing the requirements of communities and a level of provision that can be achieved within the available budget.

‘The tender process has sought to improve service provision in west Edinburgh by amending some existing routes, including provision of a new connection to Cramond, utilising a developer contribution.’

Hopefully these new routes will be approved soon and the people of west Edi won’t have to go long without their buses. Watch this space for updates!
