City life getting you down? Well, now’s your chance to switch to a very, very isolated lifestyle indeed. A remote island in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides is looking for two estate workers to manage its day-to-day affairs.
The island in question is the Isle of Rona, a 3.6-square-mile rugged patch of land accessible only by boat. There are only four cottages on the island, which sits between the Isle of Skye and Scotland’s west coast. There’s no shop on the island – the nearest proper facilities are an hour’s boat ride away in Skye.
Rona is specifically looking for one full-time role and their partner, who will also be paid a part-time salary. In other words, it’s the perfect opportunity for a couple to get away from it all and spend a bit of time on an island renowned for its stargazing, dolphin-spotting, swimming and fishing opportunities. The job includes accommodation.
So what does the job actually involve? Well, it’s a pretty multifaceted role. The estate workers will run the island’s self-catering cottages, help manage its 180 deer and also run its venison business. They’ll also do other bits of management and logistics, from maintaining solar panels to handling boats and diggers.
It should be noted that you don’t necessarily need to already be able to do all of this stuff. According to the job listing, you just need to be willing to learn. Terms used to describe the ideal applicant include ‘resilient’, ‘competent’ and ‘happy in remote areas for long periods’.
If all this sound very appealing (and, tbh, we wouldn’t blame you if it did), you can have a full look at the job spec and apply on HIJOBS here.
