No, it’s not just you – the UK has suddenly got much, much chillier. A few days of warm sunshine earlier this month tricked us into believing spring had finally started. But that, my friends, was actually something aptly referred to as ‘fool’s spring’, a brief period of balmy weather right before a cold snap. While some warm weather could arrive over the following few days, there could be snow on the way next week.
According to WX Charts, a weather mapping service that uses Met Desk data, regions across the UK could be pummelled by a two inch per hour snow storm at the end of the month.
The maps turn purple in some areas from March 27 to April 1, suggesting that counties across the Scotland, England and Wales could get blanket of snow. The heaviest will be further up north, with more of a light powdering expected down south.
Snow in England, Scotland and Wales
WX Maps shows that north Wales could get a smattering, as could parts of north-east England. Several parts of Scotland will get a heavier helping, with up to 2cm of snow per hour predicted for Ayrshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Dumfriesshire. Glasgow and Edinburgh could also get caught up in the cold stuff.
With all that said, snow is one of the weather phenomenons that’s more difficult to predict far in advance. And not all forecasters have said that it’s on its way. The Met Office predicts plenty of frosty starts over the next week and some icy conditions up north, though no there’s no mention of snow.
The Met Office’s outlook for March 21-30 reads: ‘Still fine for many at the start of this period but by Friday and into the weekend, there is an increasing likelihood that rain or showers will start to arrive from the south or west.
‘Wetter weather will probably spread to all areas, at least for a time and could be accompanied by strong winds at times. Into the following week, unsettled conditions will probably continue across many parts of the UK. Some heavy rain or showers are possible at times, these most likely across southern parts of the country.’
