Oh, us Brits do like to be beside the seaside. Even in high-speed winds and drenching showers, most of us won’t let a little bit of drizzle get in the way of a beach day. In fact, three quarters of us apparently say that rain won’t get in the way of a good staycation.

That’s according to the folks at Sykes Holiday Cottages. As well as surveying our holiday habits, the holiday let company has analysed Met Office data from the past 30 years to determine the rainiest seaside towns in the country. Researchers ranked areas based on a combination of their average number of days of more than 1mm of rainfall and the average amount of rainfall.

Whether you’re a keen wet weather walker or couldn't think of anything worse, it’s useful info to know. And emerging as the UK’s wettest coastal town was Aultbea in the Scottish Highlands, which apparently has an average of 17 days and 121mm of rainfall.

Second, third and fourth place were also held by Scottish spots: Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, Lochboisdale in the Outer Hebrides and Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute respectively. Completing the top five most shower-prone towns was Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Two cities also featured on the list. Cardiff came eighth with 13 days of more than 1mm of rainfall and average rainfall of 100mm. Blackpool came 20th with 12 days and 73mm. You can find out more about Sykes Holiday Cottages’ study here.
