Over the past few months, a bunch of awards have revealed the UK’s best gastropubs, our finest fish and shops and most exceptional restaurants for 2024. Now it’s the turn of bakeries.

British Baker, a business publication concerned about all things going on in the (you guessed it) baking industry, has unveiled its ‘Bakers Dozen’ of artisan bakeries for 2024. The publication brought together over 100 specialists from across the sector to vote for their favourite bastion of baked goods, resulting in 13 overall winners across the nation.

And it was Cumbrian bakery Lovingly Artisan that landed in first place for the second year running. Founder Aidan Monks has been labelled as ‘a truly innovative and ethical baker’ who has created award-winning loaves including a dark chocolate malt and orange sourdough.

Bread Source in Norfolk jumped from fourth place in 2023’s list to second this year for its ‘delightful line-up of products’ designed to ‘fill you up, make you smile and fuel your day’. The Dusty Knuckle was the highest ranking among the three London entriescommended for its diverse menu, purpose-driven ethos and baking classes (you can read all about why we love it here).

Completing the top five was Northern Rye in Newcastle Upon Tyne, based in the city’s vibrant cultural quarter of Ouseburn, and newcomer Farro in Bristol which received praise for the way it ‘actively [seeks] new ways to incorporate freshly milled, local grains into its season offering’.

Here’s British Baker’s full Baker’s Dozen for 2024:
