Ever wondered which train stations in the UK get the most crime every year? You’re probably thinking it would be a hub in a big city, like London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly or Birmingham New Street.
In fact, the Britain’s top station for crime in 2024 was a tiny terminal in rural Wales, according to analysis by the Daily Mail. The paper used figures from the British Transport Police (BTP) to rank every train station in the UK by crimes per million passengers in 2024.
Johnston, an unstaffed stop in the Pembrokeshire village of the same name, saw 10 crimes in 2024. If you’re wondering why Johnston topped the list, this was because only 7,000 passengers used the station in 2024, an equivalent of just 19 a day. Four of the 10 recorded crimes were violent, which could be a stabbing or a physical altercation.
In second place was Redbridge on the outskirts of Southampton. The station saw 38 crimes per 32,126 passengers. Thirteen of those offences were vehicle related, likely break-ins of cars and vans in its car park.
Charing station in Kent was in third place with 104 crimes per 89,516 passengers.
In terms of raw numbers, London St Pancras International topped the charts with 1,616 reported incidents. But this was per 38.5million passengers.
Crime in train stations has been on the rise over the past decade. Almost 80,000 offences were recorded by the BTP in 2023/24, with overall crime levels up 55 percent from 2014.
