Get some ice cream in the freezer: this weekend’s gonna be a scorcher. From noon today until 9am on Sunday, the Met Office has said temperatures across the UK are likely to hit 30C. It’ll be so hot, in fact, that a yellow heat-health alert has been issued for six regions across the country.
The regions in question are London, Yorkshire and the Humber, east Midlands, west Midlands, south-east England and east England.
According to Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris, temperatures will start rising from today (July 7), with parts of east and southeast England reaching 30C. By Saturday, this heat will have drifted up north, with parts of Scotland also reaching the high 20Cs.
Although uncomfortably sweaty nights may be ahead of us, the temps are likely to plummet from this Saturday evening. Thundery showers are then forecasted to sweep down the UK from the north-east throughout Sunday.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has advised everyone to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun. ‘The forecasted high temperatures are expected to be short-lived, but could primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions,’ said Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UKHSA.
‘If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.’
