Once every four years, we’re reminded just how gripping gymnastics is as a spectator sport. While the world championships and other competitions go by with little fanfare among the wider public, when the Olympics come around it’s consistently one of the most-watched events. Suddenly, we’re all obsessed with watching athletes risk life and limb backflipping on tiny balancing beams, catapulting off a vault and launching themselves between bars.

It’s seriously impressive (and truly terrifying) stuff. Yesterday (July 29) the Team GB men’s team came fourth in the final; Max Whitlock, Jake Jarman, Joe Fraser, Luke Whitehouse and Harry Hepworth lost to Japan, China and the USA. Team GB’s hopes for a medal in team gymnastics now rests with its women, whose final is today (July 30). You can find the full Tuesday schedule here.

Start time and how to watch the women’s artistic gymnastics team final

Tune into BBC One or BBC iPlayer at 5.15pm on July 30 to see Team GB’s women compete for a medal.

Who are the gymnasts to watch?

On the women’s team, eyes are on Becky Downie, who has returned to the Olympics after eight years. She skipped Tokyo 2020 due to the sudden passing of her brother.

Of course, they’re up against some fierce competition, particularly from the USA’s women’s squad. They’ll be head to head with Olympic veteran Simone Biles and the reigning all-around Olympic champion Suni Lee.

With three Olympic gold medals to his name, Max Whitlock is Team GB’s most decorated member. This year marks his last ever Olympic games. He was joined by 22-year-old Luke Whitehouse, who’s considered one of the top prospects in European gymnastics. At last year’s European Championships, he became the first known British gymnast to have landed a triple-back somersault.

When are the all-around gymnastics finals?

The men’s all-around final is taking place on Wednesday, July 31 at 4.30pm and the women’s final is on Thursday, August 1 at 5.15pm

Team GB members Georgia-Mae Fenton, Alice Kinsella, Jake Jarman and Joe Fraser have all made it into the final of their all-around events.
