Lovers of all things sweet, buttery and flakey, listen up. One of the nation’s favourite bakery chains, Patisserie Valerie, is making a long-awaited comeback, with two stores expected to open in the coming months.

There were once a whopping 193 Patisserie Valerie branches across the UK, but since going into administration in 2019 those have dwindled to just 29. However, around 400 Sainsbury’s supermarkets sell a selection of PV’s most popular confectionery.

At the time of its administration, the chain was apparently a bit of a sight for sore eyes. Causeway Capital Partners, the company that bought the bakery, said that it found broken ovens that had been abandoned for months, unpaid suppliers, a leaky roof at HQ and a complete lack of health and safety procedures. At one point it was so broke that it was forced to stop using butter in its puff pastry.

But now it seems things are turning around for the pastry professionals. A Patisserie Valerie cafe is set to return to Cambridge next week after lengthy renovation and another is due to arrive in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol in mid-October. More cafes are expected to open, but dates and locations haven’t been confirmed yet.

The news comes as another beloved bakery chain, Greggs, also announced expansions in early August.
