Art is often kept within the confines of ornate frames behind the doors of hushed galleries. While there is certainly a place for the velvet ropes and prestige of those institutions, world-famous British sculptor Antony Gormley wants us to think about art in a slightly different way. His next UK exhibition won’t take place in a traditional gallery but in a far less restrictive venue: a big field.

Called ‘Time Horizon’, the exhibition will be held at the grounds of Houghton Hall in Norfolk. It’ll be made up of 100 cast-iron sculptures spread across 300 acres of land. The pieces will blend into the landscape, each standing on the same horizontal plane so that some are buried and some are on stilts. Gormley hopes that the viewer will ‘roam far and wide,’ experiencing each sculpture from a unique point of view.

According to Gormley: ‘Art has recently privileged the object rather than the experience that objects can initiate. “Time Horizon” is not a picture, it is a field and you are in it.’

‘The work puts the experience of the subject/visitor/protagonist on an equal footing with all material presences, organic and inorganic. The quality of the light, the time of the year, the state of the weather and the condition of your mind, body and soul are all implicated in the field.’

The exhibition will be open from April 21 to October 31 and you can find out more on the Houghton Hall website here
