Margate in Kent has become home to Banksy’s latest piece of provocative work. The elusive street artist shared a picture of the mural on his Instagram this morning and it makes for quite a dark St Valentine’s gift.

The piece has appeared on a white brick wall in Grosvenor Place. It features a woman wearing a 1950s-style dress, an apron and yellow rubber gloves. She is smiling with a black swollen eye and a missing tooth. The message? Domestic violence against women is bad. Obvs.

Banksy has painted the image around an old freezer that is lying down horizontally against the wall. The woman seems to be shutting a man inside the freezer as two feet are depicted hanging out of the end. Various of bits rubbish also lie on the ground in front of the work, including a broken garden chair, a blue crate and an empty beer bottle. Text over the image posted by Banksy reads: ‘Valentine’s day mascara’.

It’s believed to be the artist’s first public artwork since November, when he unveiled a series of graffiti artworks in Kyiv, Ukraine.
