Royston Cave in Hertfordshire was discovered completely by accident in 1742. A workman came across the man-made cave when he was digging to build a new bench for the local market. He found a buried millstone, dug around it and unveiled a cave packed with mysterious carvings. A couple of centuries later, the same cave now has its own museum and is after a new tour guide.

If you want the job, you need to be a people person and an all-round history nerd. Royston Town Council, which owns and manages the landmark, said it is looking for ‘good communicators who have a love of history’.

Most of the carvings on the cave walls are depictions of Christian scenes and characters, such as Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection. There are also a number of non-Christian engravings, including a horse and a naked Earth Goddess known as a Sheila-na-gig.

There are no records to confirm what the cave’s origin or purpose was, but many believe that it was used by the Knights Templar as a secret place of worship. Others reckon it was used by James I to practise freemasonry and some Pagan visitors theorise that sacred ley lines, thought to connect sacred sites with electromagnetic energy, meet in the cave.

But maybe you’ve got your own theory. Emma Shaw, the cave’s manager, told the BBC that many visitors come with their own speculations.

She added: ‘Every tour is different, because visitors also bring information that they have. They'll spot something here that they've seen somewhere else and then we can investigate that.’

If going to work in such a mysterious cave everyday sounds right up your street, you’ve got two weeks to get your application in – the deadline is Wednesday, February 5.
