Cornish public transport is famously crap – and I’m allowed to say this, because I grew up there. As a teenager, getting around Cornwall would often mean waiting for hours and having to take multiple buses to get to a friend’s house that was just a few miles down the road. So, I’m happy to report that Cornish transport is about to get quite a lot better.

Soon a new train service will link two of Cornwall’s most popular beach towns – Falmouth and Newquay. The new train route will run direct trains between the coasts for the first time, according to Network Rail.

Currently getting between Newquay and Falmouth via public transport takes more than two and a half hours, with travellers having to take two trains and bus. With the new service this time will fall significantly, and trains between the towns will run every hour.

The new direct journey will call at six stations, including Newquay, Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth.

Construction on the route has already begun, with 500 metres of track and a new crossing being installed at Newquay Train Station where a second platform is being built.

This new train line is part of the £50 million Mid Cornwall Project which is hoping to improve transport in the county.

Network Rail plans to launch the service in 2026.
