Next Monday (February 5), foodies of the UK will have their eyes on Manchester’s Midland Hotel as a new set of restaurants are awarded coveted Michelin stars.
Before that, though, 20 restaurants have been awarded Bib Gourmands in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2024. Named after Bibendum the Michelin man, the awards were created in 1997 to celebrate places serving ‘good quality, good value cooking’.
Among the establishments recognised this year was Manchester’s Higher Ground and Lark in Bury St Edmunds, which both serve up seasonal small plates. A number of gastropubs, like The Loch and the Tyne in Old Windsor and The Reindeer in Nottinghamshire also made the cut, while two eateries in London received the award.
White 12 restaurants in England received the Bib Gourmand award, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland only had one winner each. Home in Belfast regained its accreditation ‘thanks to a new chef and some terrific produce’, Tipo in Edinburgh was the only Scottish winner while Touring Club in Penarth, which only opened in summer 2023, was flying the flag for Wales.
Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said: ‘It is a joy to see 20 restaurants newly awarded the Bib Gourmand in the 2024 edition of the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland.
‘These are establishments that deserve recognition for their continued commitment to offering affordable, delicious cooking. The generosity and value for money they offer is wonderful to see during these challenging economic times for the restaurant industry.’
