If you’re planning on exploring the area around the frankly stunning Lake Windermere, this hotel on the edge of the charming town of Ambleside, is a perfect base of operations. An elegant, Grade II Listed stately home with all sorts of stylish features and mod cons, Rothay Manor is built on its own plot of land, meaning it feels secluded and special, despite being right by a lively town.
All the rooms are extremely nice, but if you want to splash out a bit, you’d be well-advised to check out the Pavillion. A relatively new addition to the hotel, the eight suites are all different and each one feels special. Ours had a beautiful view over Wansfell Pike, a lovely balcony, one of the nicest bathrooms we’ve seen in a UK hotel, and very contemporary (yet cozy) furnishings.
The hotel’s unapologetically classy (yet friendly) restaurant easily challenges any in Ambleside for best in the area. The chef's commitment to seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients shines through in every course. Standout dishes included the expertly glazed lamb belly with black garlic and rainbow chard and also the crispy skinned salmon with BBQ pak choi, peas and broad beans. All were presented beautifully and tasted brilliant. And don’t miss the sticky toffee pudding, served with hot, miso-salted caramel sauce.
Rothay Manor is a bit of a gem, located in one of the nicest bits of the Lake District. Any walk you do in the area is going to be breathtaking, but even if you decide to spend the day strolling around the hotel’s gardens, the attentive and friendly staff will ensure you’re looked after well. Rothay Manor is a beautiful, stylish and comfortable option for anyone wanting to explore the Lake District.
