When one thinks of Kaş, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is its mesmerizing turquoise waters, which have established this quaint little town in southwestern Turkey as one of the best spots for scuba diving in this part of the Mediterranean. While Kaş has seen a steady stream of tourism since the 90s, particularly with the arrival of British and German holidaymakers, its cobblestone streets are still as quaint as ever, but now dotted with an ever-increasing variety of restaurants, hotels and entertainment. We've scoped out the best Kaş has to offer, from breathtaking beaches and fun activities to the best bars and restaurants in and around town.

Best things to do in Kaş

1. Take a dip at Derya Beach

What is it? You don’t need to venture far to find a good beach in Kaş. Derya Beach, located right in the centre of town, has been one of our go-to spots to take a dip for many years and counting. A local favourite for its unfussy vibe, Derya Beach is spread out over a small beach with pretty limestone rocks jutting out from the sea.

Why go? Work on a sun tan or plunge into the aquamarine waters of the Med.

Don't miss: If the sunbed area is too crowded for comfort, you can always seek shelter by the usually-quiet restaurant, which serves up decent beach club grub and cocktails.

2. Go on a boat tour

What is it? Kaş is surrounded by a plenitude of natural beauty and some only accessible by sea. By hopping on a boat tour departing from the centre of Kaş, you can explore the natural and historical wonders of Kaş up close.

Why go? Boat tours from Kaş can take you to magical places like Kekova Island, which is home to an ancient sunken city. Where else can you swim amongst the ruins of an ancient civilization?

Don't miss: Another must-visit is Kaleköy, a quaint little village only reachable by sea. Time seems to flow slower here and there’s lots to explore, including a number of well-preserved Lycian rock tombs and a medieval castle commanding impressive views over the Mediterranean. Be sure also to visit the peculiarly-named The I Am Here Cafe, whose homemade ice cream, made using their own goats’ milk, we couldn’t get enough of.

3. Nurse a drink at Mavi

What is it? A true Kaş classic going strong since 1985, Mavi is a great spot to start a night of bar hopping in town or ending a relaxing day spent at the beach. It’s pretty hard to miss as it’s located right on the town square and is decked out with rainbow-coloured chairs.

Why go? Few things can rival the joys of people-watching while nursing a cocktail or a cold beer on a balmy summer’s night at one of Mavi’s outdoor tables. If you think you’ve seen enough flip flops and fanny packs for the day, then you can always enjoy the view of the sea and the pier.

Don't miss: Make sure to catch the breathtaking sunset views.

4. Take a stroll in town and visit the king's tomb

What is it? One of the unsung pleasures of going on holiday is aimlessly wandering the streets of an unknown town. Spend an hour or so wandering the Kaş bazaar and follow your nose towards Uzun Çarşı Avenue until you come upon a mysterious historical artefact: a beautiful king’s tomb which dates back to the 4th century BC, shaded by a sycamore tree seemingly as ancient.

Why go? Strolling amongst the bay-windowed wooden houses and souvenir shops is a lovely bit of after-dinner activity, especially when you throw in some local archaeology into the mix.

Don't miss: Don't just admire the tomb from afar but get up close and admire the craftsmanship of the lion’s head motifs. You can also have a crack at deciphering the inscription on the tomb, whose mystery continues to evade archaeologists to this day.

5. Tuck into a kebab at Zaika

What is it? A true Kaş icon, Zaika is an excellent meyhane/grillhouse-style restaurant serving up excellent mezes and kebabs. Note that you need to book weeks in advance but rest assured that your efforts in securing a table will be well rewarded.

Why go? Zaika truly is head and shoulders above other eateries in the area and dining on delectable Turkish cuisine in its lovely garden area will be a highlight of any trip to Kaş.

Don't miss: Make sure to try the excellent adana kebab, lamb loin and oven baked hummus served with pastirma.

6. Spend a serene day at Hidayet Cove

What is it? While the town centre of Kaş always has plenty to offer, there’s lots to explore in the surrounding area, including a number of great beaches reachable by a short car journey. Hidayet Cove is amongst our favourite natural beaches, thanks to its crystal-clear waters and relaxed feel. Blanca Beach Club next door is another good alternative.

Why go? If you feel like a respite is needed from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kaş, spend a day recharging in a serene natural beach. While the sea is beautiful in all of Kaş, the tranquility of Hidayet Cove is truly exceptional.

Don't miss: Don't forget to kick back with a cocktail in hand while watching the sunset.

7. Admire the sunset at Büyükçakıl

What is it? While there are countless scenic spots to watch the sunset in and around Kaş, Büyükçakıl Beach arguably takes the cake. As evening falls and the beachgoers start packing their towels and coolers, Büyükçakıl takes on an almost magical aura.

Why go? Head here to watch the sunset after the sunbathers call it a day and the beach starts winding down. You'll be sure to capture some stunning shots framed by the stunning cliffs skirting around the beach.

Don't miss: After the sun sets, dine at one of the cozy restaurants overlooking the beach. Ideal for those seeking an intimate setting away from the crowds, surrounded by nature.

8. Stay up all night at Gagarin

What is it? One of the most popular watering holes in town, Gagarin is a laidback Kaş classic owned by Turkish rocker Aylin Aslım. The music here leans towards rock and alternative as you might expect from its proprietress.

Why go? Whether you’re here with a group of friends or on your lonesome, Gagarin is a great place to meet some locals and relax over a drink or two. If you’re lucky, you might even be treated to a rare rock cut by Aslım herself, who moonlights as a DJ at Gagarin.

Don't miss: Our tipple of choice here is the Laika served with chili peppers or the zesty Turist Ömer laden with orange liqueur.

9. See Kaputaş Beach with your own eyes

What is it? Kaputaş Beach is easily one of the most photographed beaches in Turkey – if not the most – and for good reason. Hemmed in by the coastal highway and towering cliffs which give on to a precipitous decline down to the beach, Kaputaş is truly something out of a postcard. The sea here is wavier compared to other beaches in Kaş and a white layer of foamy surf is ever-present on the sands. You can reach Kaputaş by car or by bus, which depart from the town centre. Be prepared for a steep descent down the stairs to reach the beach and try not to fall while you’re admiring the view.

Why go? To see one of Turkey’s most famous beaches with your own eyes and bathe in its mesmerising turquoise waters.

Don't miss: While you’re there, be sure to also visit Mavi Mağara (Blue Cave), located about 600 meters from Kaputaş Beach and accessible only by sea. The cave is a peculiar geological formation once thought to be home to seals and known today for its azure waters where it takes its name from. Rent a canoe to venture into the cave and don’t forget to take a dip inside.

10. Sample the meat-free delights of Oburus Momus

What is it? Conveniently located in the centre of Kaş, Oburus Momus is a vegan- and vegetarian-friendly seaside gastro-pub that has become popular even amongst meat-eaters.

Why god? The sea-view here is spectacular and the atmosphere is stylish yet easy-going. The wooden tables surrounded by greenery add to the rustic charm of this delightful eatery.

Don't miss: Make sure to try the Turkish breakfast staple menemen made with tofu.
